These two messages below were read on Feb.7th,2010. 　The US military exercise this year was done from Feb.1st to 9th.

Dear Prime Minister,Yukio Hatoyama,
　
米海兵隊の実弾砲撃演習に抗議します。

We protest the live-fire military drills by the US Marine.

我々は今、大分県日出生台演習場ゲート前に集まっています。４年ぶりに行われている米海兵隊の実弾砲撃演習に
反対する市民です。

We are citizens who have gathered here in front of the entrance gate of the fields of Hijudai, Oita, a designated
site for the US military exercise, in order to protest the live-fire drills by the US Marine, which is currently taking
place for 10 days after a four-year interval.

我々はとても残念な思いを抱えてこの場に立っています。

We are now here with bitter feeling of disillusionment.

昨年の衆院選で民主党に投票した多くの国民がその一票に託したのは、政治そのものの変革だったはずです。自民党が長年に
わたって進めてきた「日米軍事同盟関係」についても、きっと見直しがおこなわれるだろうと、みんな期待しました。戦後65年も
経とうというのに未だ米軍の占領下にあるかのような現状を、今度こそ変えることができるだろう、いや、変えなくてはいけない
と思って新しい政権を選択したのです。鳩山代表の掲げる「友愛」の精神と米軍最優先のわが国の現状はまったく相容れない
ものです。

What we entrusted the Democratic Party with by our votes inthe general election last year was the very reform of
Japan’s politics in foreign affairs. Naturally citizens expected that there sure would be drastic review on the Japan-
US relationships of military alliance which the Liberal Democratic Party, our former ruling party, had long maintained
and progressed. We chose your party, thinking from bottom of our hears that we could and we should, at last this time,
change the status quo in which we had been as if to be under the US occupational forces’s rule even 65 years after
the WW2. The reason for our initial high expectation came from Prime Minister Hatoyama’s motto of ‘ the spirit of
friendship,‘incompatible with the situation in Japan where the US forces precede Japanese people, which gave us
some hope.

新政権が発足して半年、我々の期待は裏切られたままです。政権は変わっても対米姿勢に何の変更もなく、日出生台の大地には
また海兵隊が砲弾を撃ち込んでいます。しかも、今回から機関銃などの小火器訓練も実施されるなど、我々の願いとは逆に演習の
拡大・強化が一方的に米軍の都合で進められています。

However, ever since the new coalition government came to office, we have been left with our expectations unfulfilled.
Office change has never brought about the fundamental change in the Japan’s policy toward the US, thus the US
Marines are currently live-firing FH 70 shells into our soil of Hijudai. Furthermore, they have arbitrarily included some
new trainings in small arms (* every kind of rifles, crew served weapon, and so on) this year, thus expanding and
strengthening their military drills one-sidedly and conveniently into the opposite direction to the one we wish for.

政府は国民にむけては「在日米軍は日本を守るためにいるのだ」と言い続けてきたけれど、しかし米海兵隊が沖縄などの基地から、
ベトナムに、イラクに、アフガニスタンに出撃し、多くの人々を殺戮し、今もなお戦闘行為を日常としていることを、国民はみな知って
います。日本を守るためではなく、世界各地で戦争をするために日本の基地が使われ、訓練が繰り返され、我々の税金が使われる
ことを、国民は知っています。

Our former ruling party continued to say, "The reason for the presence of the US Marines on our soil is their
commitment to protecting Japan,' which is now echoed by our current ruling party. However, it is plain and undeniable
to every Japanese citizen that the US Marines stationed in Okinawa left there for Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan to wage
war, killing many, still making it their routine work in the latter two countires. We all know that the US forces are here
on our soil, not to protect Japan but to use our lands as their military bases, training fields, and starting point for war
worldwide, and that some part of our tax money is allotted and consumed for that purpose.

今日、日出生台で大砲を撃った兵士が、明日、アフガニスタンの小さな村に砲撃を加えるかもしれないと思うと、胸が痛みます。
イラクの子供に銃を向ける米兵のその手に我々も手を添えているのだと思うと、その米兵の手を払いのける手を持ち得ない自分が
悔しく、つらいのです。我々はどんな戦争にも手を貸したくはありません。

We feel aches deep in our hearts, thinking that the same US Marine troops who have live-fired here may tomorrow fire
shells onto a small village in Afghanistan. Imagining that we are lending hands to rifles with　which the US soldiers will
soon take aim at innocent children in Iraq, we agonize over our powerlessness in taking their hands off the rifles.
We don't want to offer any help to their wars, any war.
　
鳩山総理がいう「友愛」は米軍にむけられるものではなく、世界のすべての民衆にこそ向けられるべきものです。左手に武器を持った
まま握手の右手を出すのではなく、武器を捨て、両手でしっかりと相手の両手を握るところから、本当の平和が生まれるのです。武力
で平和はまもれないという、歴史の示す真実をいまこそ鳩山政権がアメリカに、そして世界に向かって指し示すべきです。それこそが
「友愛」の政治だと思います。

What is described by Prime Minister Hatoyama as 'frienship spirit' should not be meant for the US forces but for global
peoples. Peace is truly achieved by firm shake-hands with the use of your two hands, not by offering only your right
hand for it while holding a weapon in your left hand. Now is the time, Mr.Prime Minister, for your cabinet to point out
to the United States the time-proven truth that weapons cannot attain nor sustain peace. 　That suggestion by you
would prove what you hold dear in the name of friendship is true.

我々は米海兵隊の軍事演習に強く抗議し、即時停止を求めます。我々は普天間の米海兵隊基地の撤去を求めます。我々は全て
の米軍基地の撤去を求めます。我々は日出生台が、農民たちの平和な営みを穏やかに包み込む緑の平原になる、その日まで
「実弾砲撃演習反対」の声をあげ、決して退かないことを、ゲート前集会参加者の総意として、ここに宣言します。

Hereby, we strongly oppose the US military exercise and demand its immediate halt. We demand the complete abolishment
of the US Futenma Base, Okinawa. We demand abolishment of all the US bases on our soil. We declare, as the will of all
present here in front of this gate, that we oppose any kind of the US military drilles, including live-firings, never giving up
our opposition till we see the day when we will recover Hijudai as a peaceful, grass-covered plain which clemently
environs peaceful lives of the villagers.

　To my fellow American Marines who are right inside of the fence now.  Can you hear me? 
Today I tell you that we are not here because we hate you.  We do not hate anyone.  We are people who love
peace.  We all love all the life, and your life is valuable to us.

今まさにフェンスの内側にいる海兵隊のみんな、聞こえるかい？　今日ここに来ているのは、君たちを憎んでのことではない。　
私たちは誰も憎まない。私たちは平和を愛する者たちの集まりだ。私たちは全ての命を愛する。もちろん君たちの命もだ。

We gathered here today because we care about your lives.  So we want you to return to America　and learn
how to live in　peace.  Many of you may think that we are protesting just because we are anti-Americans. 
But that is not true.  We are not anti-Americans.  We are ANTI-WAR and ANTI-VIOLENCE.

ここに集う私たちは君たちの命を愛する。君たちにアメリカに戻り、どうしたら平和に暮らせるかを考えてほしいと思っている。
君たちの多くは、私たちが反米主義者だから自分たちに反対していると思うかもしれない。でもそれは違う。私たちは反米主義者
ではない。私たちは反戦主義者であり、非暴力主義者なのだから。

We want to start living in the world without war and violence.  Because we know that war and violence will never
bring us peace.  So please lay down your guns and take off your boots, go back home to America, take care of
your families and live in peace.  Your mothers and your children in your family want you to return to them safe. 

私たちは戦争と暴力のない世界に生きるスタートを切りたいとおもっている。なぜなら、私たちは戦争と暴力が私たちに平和を
もたらさないことを知っているからだ。だから、どうか大砲を片付け、軍歌を脱いで、アメリカに帰ってほしい。　そして家族を大切
にし、おだやかに暮らして欲しい。君たちのお母さんや子供たちは、君たちが無事に帰ってくることを望んでいるはずだ。

This protest is not just only by Japanese.  Americans also protest.  Buddhists and Christians, men and women,
children,people of this community are also right here outside the fence.

この抗議行動は日本人だけが行っているのではない。アメリカ人も行っている。仏教徒も、キリスト教徒も、男の人も女の人も、
子供たちも、この地域に住む人たちも皆、今、このフェンスの外側にいる。

Please stop using Japan as your military training ground.  Here we raise our family.  Here we enjoy our lives. 
You are not welcome here with your guns and your arms and your violence.  Please let us, Japanese, to be
able to live in peace without the presence of the United States troops on our lands.

どうか日本を軍隊の訓練場に使わないでほしい。この地で私たちは家族の幸せを育んでいる。この地で私たちは人生を楽しんで
いる。大砲や武器や暴力を引き連れた君たちは、歓迎されていないんだ。君たちのような合衆国の軍隊などいらない。平和に
生きていきたいと思っている私たち日本人の思いを踏みにじらないで欲しい。

Please remember, even if the government of the United States　wants you to live your life cheaply, you shouldn't. 
Even if they force to kill somebody else, please don't.  You don't have to die or kill for them.

それから、もう一つ。　たとえ合衆国政府が君に命を粗末にさせようと躍起になっても、君はそれに従うべきじゃない。たとえ彼らが
君に他の誰かを殺させようとしても、やめた方がいい。そんな奴らのために、君は殺したり、殺されたりする必要はない。

You know, your life is precious.  So, love yourself.  We, peace loving Japanese people, want you to live in peace. 
We, who gathered here today, want to live in peace.  Do you think that we are dreamers?  Well, the answer is
“No.”  We are not dreamers.  We are realists.  Because we realize that this world will no more exist as long as
war and violence take place on this planet.

命は二つとないんだよ。だから、どうか君自身を愛して欲しい。平和を愛する私たち日本人は、君たちが平和な暮らしを送ることを願う。
平和な暮らしを送ることは、今日ここに集まっている私たち自身の思いでもある。君は私たちの言っていることは理想にすぎないと
思うかい？答えは「No」だ。私たちは理想主義者ではない。私たちは現実主義者だ。なぜなら、戦争や暴力がこのまま地球上に
はびこる限り、世界がこのまま存在し続けるとはないと知っているからだ。

Go back to America, please.  And next time you come to Japan　with your lovers and friends and your family,
I’m gonna take you to the sightseeing.  Why don’t we talk about peace as friends then.  And let’s protest against
war and violence together.

どうかアメリカに帰ってほしい。そして今度君が恋人や友達や家族と来た時には、僕が観光案内をしてあげる。その時は平和について
語り合おう。そして一緒に戦争反対、暴力反対を叫ぼうじゃないか。

Well, to my fellow American Marines, my brothers and sisters, I appreciate your attention.  Thank you, guys, for
listening to me.

アメリカ海兵隊よ。僕の家族よ。聞いてくれてありがとう。
