The armies of Japan and the United States are expected to test their missile defense preparedness in a military exercise next Monday, the Washington Times reported (see GSN, Oct. 28).

日米の陸軍は来週月曜日（＊）の軍事訓練において、ミサイル防衛の即応態勢をテストする予定である、とワシントン・タイムズ＊が伝えた。

"The scenario is one that involves major combat operations," said Lt. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, the U.S. Army's Pacific commander.　

「そのシナリオは、主要な戦闘行動を含むものだ」と、米国陸軍太平洋司令長官のベンジャミン・ミクソン中将は語った。

The annual joint exercise, called "Mountain Cherry Blossom," will test missile defenses, air defenses and ground combat readiness, the general said.

毎年行われる「マウンテン・チェリー・ブロッサム」という名の共同訓練は今回、ミサイル防衛、航空防衛、地上戦闘即応態勢を試すことになる、と述べた。

Set to take place on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido, the drill "reinforces the commitment we have in our defense relationship with the Japanese military," Mixon said in Hawaii.

日本の北の北海道で行われる予定のこの演習は「日本軍（the Japanese military）と間に持つ防衛協力における米国の関与を強化するものだ」と、ハワイにいるミクソン中将は言う。

The two nations are collaborating on missile defense because "naturally there is a missile threat that exists within the region," Mixon said in an apparent reference to North Korea.

両国はこの地域内に存在するミサイルの脅威が当然ながらあるため、ミサイル防衛に関して協力し合っている」と、あきらかに北朝鮮を引き合いにだしながら述べた。

Approximately 5,000 U.S. and Japanese soldiers are expected to participate in the drill at Camp Hagashi Chitose, a U.S. Army spokeswoman said.

Japan has received assistance from Washington in building up its missile defenses, which include land-based Patriot Advanced Capability 3 missile defense systems and sea-based Standard Missile 3 interceptors deployed on two Aegis warships (Bill Gertz, Washington Times, Dec. 3)
