and the elder sister were chatting in the living room, so I guess they
two died in the room. We had not lived there long
after moving in from our own house in Kako-machi, which was demolished for
fire-lane making at the end of July. “

east to Denpuku Temple, for the work place of the bookbinding factory run
by Yutaka, her second son. Remains were
found and identified the next year when Yutaka and some others dug out the
burnt-out lot of the kitchen. ▼ She and ‘Shimamoto,’
the husband of her grand-daughter, died.
‘ Shimamoto,’ who was living in a room upstairs in the house seems to
have died at A-bomb, but the detail is unknown.

製本業手伝い▼傳福寺東隣の自宅から、二男の豊が営んでいた材木町60番地の製本所に向かい、爆死したとみられる。二男らが翌年に炊事場跡を掘り返し、遺骨を確認▼孫娘の夫「島本」と2人。2階に間借りしていた「島本」も爆死したとみられるが、詳細は不明。(注・遺影なし)
UEZONO Shigen ( 62) (Left)

priest of Jo-en Temple, Joh-do Shin-Shu ▼ A-bomb death in Main Hall of the temple at 4, Zaimoku-cho. His grandchild identified
the remains. ▼ Thee: He, his wife, and one grandchild. In September, Shisui, his
eldest son, got demobilized in Kochi
and sent home. He rebuilt the temple, and then on Aug. 6, 1947, held a joint buddhist
memorial service as the third anniversary of those perished in the district,
which attracted residents and the bereaved families, totaling about 60.
Shisui says, “Rather, we one another confirmed the joy of life. That feeling prevailed over sorrow among us. “
The temple was moved out in 1952 under the ‘Law of Constructing Hiroshima Peace
Memorial City’ announced officially on Aug.6th,1949, and currently it is situated in Nakashima-cho, Naka-ku, to the south
of Peace Boulevard.

浄土真宗淨圓寺住職▼材木町4番地の本堂で爆死。孫が遺骨を確認▼妻と孫の3人。9月に高知県から復員した長男志水が再建した境内で、3回忌に当たる47年8月6日、住民遺族約60人が初めての合同法要を営む。志水は「むしろお互い生きていることの喜びを確かめ合いました。その気持ちの方が強かったと思います」。寺は、49年8月6日公布の「広島平和記念都市建設法」に基づく公園建設で52年移転し、現在は平和大通り南側の中区中島町にある。

prefectural office, in the building-demolition service as occupational voluntary
corps under labor force order, and died on 7th on the Island of Kanawa she was brought to. About sixty workers of the bank consisting of
the corps all died. ▼ Three, the rest of her family, all died at A-bomb, before then all living
across the road from the site where their own house had stood until the
demolition for fire-lane making, in 56, Zaimoku-cho. SAKATA Yukiko, a cousin, who then lived in 62, Zaimoku-cho, says, “ On
the previous evening, we went to see the movie titled ‘ Monpe-san ‘ ( starring
TSUKIOKA Yumeji ) in a movie theater in Shin-Ten-Chi. Yoshiko and her mother had been looking forward to seeing that. On our
way back home, we found some scrap wood at a vacant lot after building
demolition near Hiroshima Postal Office, which we dragged home in order
to use as firewood--a memory I vividly remember.”

芸備銀行勤務▼県庁北側の建物疎開作業に職域義勇隊として動員され、収容先の金輪島で7日死去。同行の義勇隊約60人全滅▼材木町56番地の自宅が建物疎開となり、筋向かいに家族4人で移り、3人が爆死。62番地に住んでいた、いとこの坂田幸子は「新天地の映画館で前日の夕、芳子さん母子と楽しみにしていた『モンペさん』(注・月丘夢路主演)を見ました。帰りしな、広島郵便局そばの建物疎開跡にあった廃材をまき代わりに、3人が引きずり持って帰ったのをありありと思い出します」。

flat surface, which he had obtained in China as a sailor. Then a stranger told me how to recognize bones: By striking bones you can
tell the difference, hard bone is man’s remain, fragile one is woman’s. So y striking the bones around, I distinguished the remains of uncle’s
from aunt’s.”

in order to bring some rice from On-do cho, Aki-Gun, her birthplace, back
to 1, Yokogawa-cho ( Nishi-Ku), where she moved in on the 5th after her
own home was demolished for making fire-lane.
Died in On-do cho, in Nov. 2nd,1948. ▼ Three: She,
her husband, and their eldest daughter.
Sen-ichi, her husband, who was exposed to A-bomb at home, 1.5km GZ, says,
“ One year after the A bomb, she became bed-ridden. Even a doctor could not diagnose the illness
and she died. I presume that the cause
of her death was the toxic substances from A-bomb which she had inhaled. “ (

自宅が建物疎開となり、5日夜に移った横川町1丁目(西区)から、郷里の安芸郡音戸町へ米を取りに戻るため、宇品港に向かう市内電車内で被爆。48年11月2日、音戸町で死去▼夫と長女との3人。爆心1・5キロの自宅で被爆した夫千一は「妻は1年後に寝込むようになり、医者が診ても原因が分からないまま死にました。原爆の毒を吸ったせいだと思います」。(注・遺影なし)

grand-daughter, who worked, as a woman volunteer corps, for Hiroshima Branch of
Osaka Army Quartermaster Division, confirmed the remains at the burnt-out lot
of the living room. ▼ Three died: She, one of her three grand-daughters, and a grandson who visited
her. Fujiko, who lived together with her, says, “ What with the deaths of my
parents from illnesses, with lack of footwear, and with the conscript enrollment
of its man worker, the wholesale shop had been closed after the first sale
of the new year in 1944.”

in order to look after her grandmother, came back on the 7th, and identified
her remains by her gold-tooth. ▼ Five: She, her parents, and sisters.Masaki, her younger sister, says, “ Allegedly, my sister, who got trapped underneath the fallen ceiling claddings, cried out, “ Help!” before she got all caught in the fire. Mr.Yamaguchi, one of the company workers, who came all the way to Kasaoka
in order to tell us about her death, also died later. “ Inoue Commerce and Industry Co. was a manufacturer of an ear-protecting
device for artillery-men. Several scores of its workers at the factory at 50, Zaimoku-cho, and the
other at Hiratori District (Naka-ku) died, they say.

井上商工勤務▼材木町62番地の自宅兼事務所で死去。岡山県小田郡笠岡町に住む祖母を見舞っていた父らが7日に戻り、金歯で遺骨を確認▼両親や妹との5人。妹昌子は「姉は天井はりの下敷きになり、『助けて』と叫んで火に包まれたそうです。その場にいて、笠岡まで訪ね知らせてくださった社員の山口さんも亡くなりました」。井上商工は町内50番地のほか白島地区(中区)の工場で、砲兵の耳を守る護耳器をつくり、従業員数十人が死去したという。

for fire-lane making, so he and his wife moved again and began living in
Kawasa-machi ( Naka-Ku).

Takehara-machi, Kamo-gun ( Takehara city ).
The wife now aged 90 says, “ Around 9th, I found, at the burnt-out lot of our house, two people’s
skeletal remains. As I could not identify whose bones they were, I did not put
them in the tomb. No matter how many years pass by, my grief over losing my family never
goes away. “

her fourth daughter and Shizuko, her third daughter, who was then the 4th year student of Aki Girls High School, mobilized for service under student
labor force order at Toyo Seikan Kaisha LTD. , 1.5 Km GZ. ▼ Five died of seven people of two
families, she and her four children, and her younger brother and his wife.
Shizuko said, “ Mother was found, as skeletal remains, in the bomb shelter made
under the earth floor of house entrance.
I put, in an big aluminum basin, some bones supposedly of mother’s, elder
sister’s, and my aunt’s. Wondering what to do from then on in order to
survive with my still small younger sister, I had no time to spare for
collapsing in tears. “

材木町4番地の1の自宅で爆死。爆心1・5キロの東洋製罐に動員されていた安芸高女4年の三女静子が妹の四女利子と11日ごろ、金歯により確認▼子どもとの5人と、弟夫婦の2世帯7人のうち5人が死去。三女は「母は玄関土間に掘っていた防空ごうで白骨になっていました。金たらいに母、姉、叔母の3人とみられる遺骨を納めました。幼い妹とどうやって暮らせばいいのかと考えると、泣き崩れるどころではありませんでした」。

NAKASHIMA Ryuon (70)
Former chief priest of Myoho-ji, Nichiren religion ▼ A bomb death on the premise of the temple at 5 Zaimoku-cho, which he had
been taking care of in place of SEKINE Tatsuo, the succeeding chief preist,
who had been called to conscript service. ▼ All the four of two
families, his and Sekine’s, perished.
Hatsuko, his grand-daughter, then the first-year student of Hijiyama Girls
High School, said, “ I was told by my mother that my grandfather’s remains
were found in the bomb shelter on the temple premise. “ On the temple premise, there was a shrine of‘ Great God of Kasamori’which
dated back to the era of Edo. Not only the shrine attracted many house wives and women of the red-light
district for a hundred time prayer, but also well-known were the summer
festival and the boisterous stalls on the premise.

日蓮宗妙法寺前住職▼後を譲った関根龍雄住職が召集となり、留守を預かっていた材木町5番地の境内で爆死▼関根住職の親族との2世帯4人が全滅。比治山高女1年だった孫ハツ子は「祖父の遺体は境内の防空ごうで見つかったと、母から聞きました」。江戸期から続く「かさもり大明神」があり、主婦や花柳界の女性たちがお百度参りに訪れたほか、夏祭りと露店のにぎわいで知られた。

died June 28th, 1947. ▼ The family of four, including children. Toshiko, his third
daughter, then a 2nd grader, who was evacuated with her mother to Toyama-mura, Asa-gun ( Asa-Minami-Ku ), says, “ I remember when I cleaned
his body with a piece of cloth, there were innumerable red spots all over
the skin surface around his stomach.”

陸軍運輸部勤務▼材木町6番地の自宅から出た宇品町の運輸部で被爆し、47年6月28日死去▼子どもとの4人。小学2年の時に母と安佐郡戸山村(安佐南区)に疎開していた三女利子は「父の遺体を布でふいた際、おなかの辺りに無数の赤い斑点(はんてん)が浮き上がっていたのを覚えています」。

In 1952 when I was a 2nd grader, I went with my
mother to Tamon-in on the mountain of Hiji-yama, to pray at the monument for
Post Office workers who perished at A bomb.
Then she said the name of my father's elder brother was inscribed on the monument as well as the others. That is all I know about the elder brother of my father.” (Note: no photo)
